Frequently Asked Questions about Speech Therapy for Stroke Recovery

Speech therapy helps people rebuild communication, speech, language, voice, and swallowing skills affected by stroke. Depending on the individual’s needs, therapy may focus on aphasia, dysarthria, dysphagia, AAC support, or everyday communication strategies. The goal is to improve participation in daily life, whether that involves conversations, meals, appointments, work, or social activities.

As early as possible, sometimes during hospital-based rehabilitation. Early intervention can help identify communication and swallowing difficulties and support recovery sooner. However, recovery does not only happen in the early stages. Many people continue to benefit from speech therapy months or even years after a stroke as part of ongoing stroke rehabilitation.

There is no fixed timeline for speech therapy for stroke recovery. The length of therapy depends on factors such as the severity of the stroke, the type of communication or swallowing difficulties present, personal goals, and overall recovery progress. Some people may only require short-term support, while others benefit from ongoing therapy over a longer period.
