Who Is This Service For?

Changes in communication or swallowing can happen gradually as people age, or they may appear after illness, hospitalisation, stroke, or neurological conditions. Families often begin to notice small but meaningful changes first, such as difficulty following conversations, coughing during meals, or withdrawing from social situations because communication feels harder than it used to.

Speech therapy for seniors may help if you or a loved one is:

If some of these situations sound familiar, aged care speech pathology can provide practical support that helps seniors stay connected, communicate more comfortably, and maintain safety and quality of life in everyday routines.

This can happen due to ageing, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Dementia, neurological conditions, or illness. A speech therapist can help seniors communicate more comfortably, stay socially connected, and manage swallowing difficulties more safely.

Speech therapy can help people with Dementia or Alzheimer’s maintain communication skills and stay engaged in daily life for as long as possible. Therapy may include strategies for memory, conversation support, word-finding difficulties, and reducing frustration during communication. Speech language pathologists can also support families and carers with practical ways to improve communication at home.

Some seniors may also take much longer to finish meals or experience repeated chest infections.
