Frequently Asked Questions about Adult Speech Therapy

An occupational therapist helps adults develop, regain, or maintain the skills needed for everyday life. This may include support with personal care, household tasks, mobility, work, study, community participation, and leisure activities. Occupational therapists also recommend strategies, equipment, and environmental modifications to improve safety, independence, and quality of life.

Adult occupational therapy can support people living with a wide range of conditions, including neurological conditions, stroke, brain injury, chronic pain, arthritis, mental health conditions, intellectual disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, and progressive conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. Occupational therapists focus on how these conditions affect daily life and participation, rather than treating the diagnosis itself.

Private occupational therapy fees in Sydney commonly range from around $200 to $300 per session, depending on the provider, therapist experience, appointment length, and whether the service is delivered in a clinic, home, or community setting. NDIS-funded services are typically charged in line with current NDIS pricing arrangements. For an accurate cost estimate, please contact our team to discuss your needs and funding options.

Medicare may contribute to the cost of occupational therapy for eligible individuals with a chronic or complex health condition. Your GP may refer you under a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP), which can provide access to Medicare rebates for a limited number of allied health services each calendar year. Eligibility and the number of rebated sessions depend on your individual circumstances and referral pathway.

Occupational therapy and physiotherapy have different but complementary roles, so one is not necessarily better than the other. Physiotherapy often focuses on improving movement, strength, balance, and physical function, while occupational therapy focuses on helping people participate more independently in everyday activities at home, work, and in the community. Many adults benefit from receiving both services as part of a coordinated care plan.
