Speech therapy can support much more than speech alone. For adults and older people, communication and swallowing difficulties can affect independence, relationships, mealtimes and participation in everyday life. Our team works with each person to understand what has changed and provide practical support around their individual goals.
A stroke can affect the way a person speaks, understands language, reads, writes or communicates their thoughts. Speech therapy can help rebuild communication skills and develop strategies that make everyday conversations easier, whether at home, with family or in the community.
Parkinson’s disease can affect speech and voice over time, including speaking more quietly, becoming less clear or finding it harder to communicate in conversations. Speech therapy can support clearer communication and help people maintain their ability to participate in conversations and everyday activities.
Changes in communication are common for people living with dementia and can sometimes make conversations or everyday interactions more difficult. Speech therapy can help families understand these changes and develop practical ways to support communication, participation and connection.
Changes in swallowing can sometimes happen after a stroke or alongside neurological conditions and ageing. A speech pathologist can assess swallowing and help identify strategies that may make eating and drinking safer and more comfortable.
Dysphagia is the term used for difficulty swallowing food, drinks or saliva. Support may include practical recommendations around food and drink, positioning, eating and drinking habits, and communication with family members or other people involved in care.
When swallowing becomes difficult, mealtimes can become stressful for the person and their family. We can provide practical guidance to help families understand swallowing difficulties and support safer, more manageable mealtimes in everyday settings.
Choosing a speech therapy provider is not just about finding a clinic nearby. For many families, particularly when supporting an older relative, it is important to find a team that understands the person, communicates clearly with their family and makes care feel comfortable and accessible.
Our speech therapy clinic is based at 139A Cabramatta Road East, Cabramatta NSW 2166, making it easier for local families to access face-to-face appointments without travelling to another suburb. Being based locally also means our team understands the importance of making therapy practical for everyday life, whether support is needed at home, during conversations with family or around mealtimes.
Communication is closely connected to language and culture, particularly when supporting older adults who may be more comfortable speaking a language other than English. Members of our team speak Vietnamese, Cantonese and Assyrian, helping families access care in a way that feels more familiar and comfortable. Where a preferred language is not spoken by the treating clinician, we can also work with interpreters where appropriate.
Brighter Futures Allied Health is an NDIS-registered provider, supporting eligible NDIS participants with speech pathology services. We can work with participants, families and support teams to understand how speech therapy may fit within their individual goals and funded supports.
Whether attending an appointment at our clinic, accessing support through the NDIS or using our mobile services, our team can help make accessing speech therapy as straightforward as possible.

A standard 45-minute speech therapy session at Brighter Futures Allied Health starts from $205. Assessment fees vary depending on the type of assessment required. Eligible clients may also be able to access funding through the NDIS, Medicare or private health insurance.
A referral is not generally required to make an appointment with a speech pathologist. Some people are referred by their GP, specialist or another health professional, particularly following a stroke or when there are concerns about swallowing. If a referral would be helpful, you can speak with your GP or a local hospital or medical clinic in the Cabramatta area, such as Cabramatta Medical Centre, and ask whether they can refer you to a speech pathologist.
Medicare rebates may be available in some circumstances, depending on the type of service and whether the relevant Medicare requirements are met. Eligibility can vary, so it is best to discuss your circumstances with our team and check the current Medicare requirements before booking.
Speech therapy helps people recover or adapt to communication and swallowing difficulties after a stroke. For example, someone may know exactly what they want to say but struggle to find the words, have difficulty understanding a conversation, or cough when eating and drinking. The type of support depends on which abilities have been affected and how the person is progressing, so therapy may focus on communication, swallowing, or both. A speech language pathologist can assess these difficulties and develop practical strategies to help the person communicate and participate more confidently in everyday life.
There is no fixed number of speech therapy sessions for a person with dementia because the amount of support needed can change as their communication and swallowing needs change. For example, someone who is having difficulty finding words may benefit from strategies that help them communicate with family, while someone experiencing swallowing difficulties may need more regular support around safe eating and drinking. Some people may benefit from a short course of therapy, while others may need ongoing reviews and support as their needs change. The speech pathologist will recommend an appropriate approach based on the person’s needs, goals and everyday circumstances.
